Overview

Living and working in the 21st century will bring a range of sustainability challenges that our society has not seen before. For many people on our planet key resources such as food, water and energy will be in short supply, whilst the effects of climate change will be felt by everyone.

This unit is designed to support the Professional Engineering and Professional Engineering Management core units at Level 4 and 5. On successful completion of this unit the student with possess a wide range of knowledge and understanding of the issues and topics associated with sustainability and low carbon engineering.

Modules

  1. Determine the nature and scope of the technical challenges of ensuring sustainable development
  2. Articulate the importance of collaborating with other disciplines in developing technical solutions to sustainability problems
  3. Evaluate the use of alternative energy generation techniques in relation to their contribution to a low carbon economy
  4. Analyse a variety of data sources to estimate the carbon footprint of a sociotechnical scenario

Career Progression

The ideal career pathway for a candidate would be into and HNC/HND course or apprenticeship within Construction Site supervision, Surveying focusing on the environment and sustainability.

This unit would also support up skilling of an individual who is already in employment within the built environment but wants to broaden their skill set.

This unit would be recognised within both NVQ and BTEC L4 Construction/Engineering programs dependent of the pathway undertaken.

Aspire Eligibility

All programmes are open to Londoners who meet the following criteria:

  • UK resident and living in London
  • Aged 18+
  • Do not hold a level 4 (post-college/sixth form) qualification
  • Either employed (and earning less than London Living Wage) or unemployed/economically inactive

What is expected of me?

- To be an active participant in the programme.

- To complete all of the workbooks funding paperwork and the accredited unit.

- To undertake a workbased project (will be supplied by us if you are currently not working)

- To participate in all the group online workshops and 1-2-1 coaching sessions.

How much does this cost?

Participation in this programme is completely free. It is fully funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Additional support for travel to and from places of study and other expenses will vary depending on the provider and the support they are able to offer. These options will be discussed during your enrolment.

How long will it take?

The part time programme typically takes 8 - 12weeks to complete

Can I take more than one unit?

You cannot study more than one unit on the Aspire London Programme.  However, upon completion of your programme, you’ll get advice and guidance from your Aspire Careers Coach about how and where you can continue to study, if this is the next step for you and your career progression. This could include a full Level 5 qualification.
