Overview

This interesting unit provides a broad introduction to the sociological aspects of health and social care in the UK and internationally. Students are introduced to the overall concepts of health and social care and to the ways in which sociological imagination helps to understand the development of public health as a discipline and as a practice. The module enables students to begin to consider concepts of health, determinants of health and well-being, health assets and the identification of health and social care needs.

Additionally, this unit aims to develop leaners’ knowledge of contemporary health and social care policy and will help students to adopt population level approach. It will enable students to identify how concepts such as health are constructed and why social policy in relation to health and social care has evolved as a result. It will address the contemporary shape of public health theory and provision as well as begin to analyse issues, debates and influences on its continuing development.

Career Progression

Successful completion of this unit can be used as recognition of prior learning (RPL). When you have completed this unit, you will be able to progress to the Level 4 Certificate in Public Health and Social Care course delivered at Croydon College’s university centre as a full time one-year course of 120 Level 4 credits.  

The unit can also be used as a unique CPD opportunity to gain skills and knowledge of the public health and social care sector. It is a particularly relevant unit for those looking to work in the healthcare sector or those wanting to progress their career.

Aspire Eligibility

All programmes are open to Londoners who meet the following criteria:

  • UK resident and living in London
  • Aged 18+
  • Do not hold a level 4 (post-college/sixth form) qualification
  • Either employed (and earning less than London Living Wage) or unemployed/economically inactive

Course Eligibility

A Level 2 qualification in English would be preferable

A Level 2 qualification in Maths would be preferable.

Candidates without Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths may still apply but may be required to complete an initial assessment

How much does this cost?

Participation in this programme is completely free. It is fully funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Additional support for travel to and from places of study and other expenses will vary depending on the provider and the support they are able to offer. These options will be discussed during your enrolment.

How long will it take?

The part time programme typically takes 8 - 12weeks to complete

Can I take more than one unit?

You cannot study more than one unit on the Aspire London Programme.  However, upon completion of your programme, you’ll get advice and guidance from your Aspire Careers Coach about how and where you can continue to study, if this is the next step for you and your career progression. This could include a full Level 5 qualification.
