Overview

Programming involves describing processes and procedures which are derived from algorithms.  The ability to program is what sets apart a developer and an end user.  Typically, the role of the developer is to instruct a device (such as a computer) to carry out instructions; the instructions are known as a source code and is written in a language that is converted into something the device can understand.

This unit introduces you to the core concepts of programming with an introduction to algorithms and the characteristics of programming paradigms.  On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to design and implement algorithms in a chosen language within a suitable Integrated Development Environment (IDE).  This IDE will be used to develop and help track any issues with the code.

Modules

  1. Basic algorithms to carry out an operation and outline the process of programming an application. An introduction to algorithm definitions and creation
  2. Characteristics of procedural, object-orientated and event-driven programming. An introduction to the characteristics of coding
  3. Implementing basic algorithms. An introduction to developing simple algorithms
  4. Debugging process and coding standards. An introduction to the debugging process and the benefits of a coding standard

Career Progression

Achievement of this unit can aid progression to a Level 4 Higher national certificate qualification, e.g. L4 HNC in Software Development, or enhance employment opportunities in a relevant vocational area.  This unit would count towards recognition of prior learning for the Level 4 HNC in Software Development, and act as a springboard into a variety of different career pathways including software developer, cyber security technologist, data analyst, digital community manager or network engineer via continuing higher education.
