Overview

The need to be effective as a communicator, critical thinker, analyser, team worker and interpreter is essential. Within the workplace these skills are needed on a daily basis to show proficiency in designated tasks as part of a job role. The development of academic competence, and also the continuation of life-long learning and Continuing Professional Development (CPD), is required to ensure that individuals have a valued set of interpersonal skills that can be applied to any situation or environment.

This unit provides a foundation for good practice in a variety of contexts. The ability to communicate effectively using different tools and mediums will ensure that practical, research, design, reporting and presentation tasks are undertaken professionally and in accordance with various communication conventions. In addition, professional development extends into higher levels of learning and the need to demonstrate effective research skills and academic reporting skills is also required.

Among the topics included in this unit are: the development of communication skills and communication literacy; the use of qualitative and quantitative data to demonstrate analysis, reasoning and critical thinking; and tasks that require the integration of others within a team-based scenario and planning and problem-solving.

This mini module will allow you to develop effective communication, interpersonal skills and time management skills

  1. Critical reasoning and thinking and problem-solving scenarios

Tools, Methods solution methodologies all form part of this module, allowing you opportunities as Computing student to prepare for the world of industry

  1. The importance and dynamics of working within a team and the impact of team working in different environments

Nature and dynamics of a team and the importance of group work also discussions regarding team building and the function of teams

  1. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and its role within the workplace and for higher level learning

Responsibilities, performance objectives and theories of motivation and performance

Career Progression

If you are looking for a role in Computing or related discipline then this unit is an ideal introduction to understanding the professional skills needed to succeed in your chosen discipline.

This unit counts towards a Level 4 or 5 Higher National qualification and possible Higher Apprenticeship opportunities.  Potential career pathways include civil engineering, building services engineering, quantity surveying, construction management, and architectural technology.

All programmes are open to Londoners who meet the following criteria:

  • UK resident and living in London
  • Aged 18+
  • Do not hold a level 4 (post-college/sixth form) qualification
  • Either employed (and earning less than London Living Wage) or unemployed/economically inactive

What is expected of me?

How much does this cost?

Participation in this programme is completely free. It is fully funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Additional support for travel to and from places of study and other expenses will vary depending on the provider and the support they are able to offer. These options will be discussed during your enrolment.

How long will it take?

The part time programme typically takes 8 - 12weeks to complete

Can I take more than one unit?

You cannot study more than one unit on the Aspire London Programme.  However, upon completion of your programme, you’ll get advice and guidance from your Aspire Careers Coach about how and where you can continue to study, if this is the next step for you and your career progression. This could include a full Level 5 qualification.
