Overview

The Learning and Studying at Work module is designed to equip you with the skills you need to maximise learning at work with the opportunity to hear from specialists in a range of employment areas

This module aims to prepare you with knowledge of the key skills required for successful higher education work-based learning and basic concepts in an identified area of employment and/or subject.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

1. Identify and apply the concept of reflective practice to your work context to become a more effective, independent, and self-motivated learner in an identified work context.

2. Develop your ability to set personal and/or professional career goals and evaluate progress.

3. Apply established approaches to the analysis, organisation and presentation of information and data to audiences in familiar and unfamiliar work and learning contexts.

Modules

This unit introduces you to the learning and development process, using skills and competence frameworks, setting personal objectives and evaluating the outcome of learning activities. This includes an introduction to:

  1. Models and styles of learning
  2. Written communication and referencing
  3. Information and data literacy
  4. Personal, professional, and academic organization
  5. Improving own learning performance in an identified work context
  6. Problem solving, reasoning, inquiry methods, creative thinking and evaluation
  7. Learning at work in specialist occupational settings

Career Progression

This module is designed to boost your career prospects and provide a route to higher and degree apprenticeships or other education, training and work in health, social care, digital and creative sectors. For example, this could lead to opportunities to be employed as a:

• Registered Nurse degree apprentice

• Nursing Associate higher apprentice

• Social Worker degree apprentice

• Digital Technologies Solutions Professional degree apprentice

• Creative Digital Design Professional degree apprentice

The credit gained through successfully completing this module can count towards the these and other higher education qualifications.

Aspire Eligibility

All programmes are open to Londoners who meet the following criteria:

  • UK resident and living in London
  • Aged 18+
  • Do not hold a level 4 (post-college/sixth form) qualification
  • Either employed (and earning less than London Living Wage) or unemployed/economically inactive

Course Eligibility

This module will be of most benefit to learners who have level 2 functional skills (English and maths). The Middlesex University on-boarding process will include an assessment of your functional skills and where these are assessed at below level 2, we will discuss eligibility with you, including the potential for functional skills support.

What is expected of me?

- To be an active participant in the programme.

- To complete all of the workbooks funding paperwork and the accredited unit.

- To undertake a workbased project (will be supplied by us if you are currently not working)

- To participate in all the group online workshops and 1-2-1 coaching sessions.

How much does this cost?

Participation in this programme is completely free. It is fully funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Additional support for travel to and from places of study and other expenses will vary depending on the provider and the support they are able to offer. These options will be discussed during your enrolment.

How long will it take?

The part time programme typically takes 8 - 12weeks to complete

Can I take more than one unit?

You cannot study more than one unit on the Aspire London Programme.  However, upon completion of your programme, you’ll get advice and guidance from your Aspire Careers Coach about how and where you can continue to study, if this is the next step for you and your career progression. This could include a full Level 5 qualification.
