Overview

This unit will provide students with knowledge and understanding of the impact of health inequalities on the health needs of individuals, groups and communities. The module will address aspects of equality and diversity as well as environmental conditions, access to healthcare and availability of resources. The module will also enable investigation into the impact of ill health on vulnerable people and minority groups in the UK such as the homeless, the travelling community, older people, and people with learning disabilities. Learners will examine strategies for health needs assessment and the skills involved in assessing the health needs of individuals and groups. You will develop an understanding of the concept of health assets and its role in overall health and wellness.

The unit aims to enable learners to effectively appraise the circumstances in which an individual’s or group’s life may result in health inequality. You will gain an appreciation of the factors that contribute to a health needs assessment of local populations susceptible to high mortality and morbidity rates and recognise the determining factors that contribute to their poor health outcomes.
