The basic principles of construction technology have not changed for hundreds of years. However, the materials and techniques used to achieve these basic principles are constantly evolving to provide buildings which enhance environmental and energy performance to meet increasing legal and economic constraints.
This course teaches you the different technological concepts used to enable the construction of substructures, superstructures, building services elements and infrastructure components; and understand the different functional characteristics and design considerations when selecting the most suitable solution.
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to analyse scenarios and select the most appropriate construction solution for a range of construction and built environment projects.
1. Explain the terminology used in construction technology
How to apply the terminology used in construction technology to a given building construction project
2. Describe the different techniques used to construct a range of substructures and superstructures
How to prepare a design report identifying superstructure, substructure and civil engineering structures necessary for a given building construction project
3. Identify the different types of civil engineering/infrastructure technology used in support of buildings
An introduction to the types of structural frame used to carry the primary and secondary elements of the superstructure
4. Illustrate the supply and distribution of a range of building services and how they are accommodated within the building
How to describe and analyse the elements of the superstructure used to facilitate the primary services
If you are looking for a role in construction or related discipline then this unit is an ideal introduction to understanding how technologies are transforming the industries of construction and the built environment, and to prepare you for further study or the world of work.
This unit counts towards a Level 4 or 5 Higher National qualification and possible Higher Apprenticeship opportunities. Potential career pathways include civil engineering, building services engineering, quantity surveying, construction management, and architectural technology.
All programmes are open to Londoners who meet the following criteria:
